Delectation of Hikari Express. To understand what I mean, you must hop on a Shinkansen today or soon someday. Yokohama to Kyoto was my route on this latest expedition, departing at 6:03 amidst the rising sun. Only about 5% of the seats seemed occupied which was spectacular, as I was immediately struck with the ingenuity of the world’s most renowned ‘bullet train’ that was founded in 1964. First of all, it was sickeningly clean. Not a pube was to be found, be it domestic or international. Seats, windows and most importanly the white body itself seemed whiter than a poofy Alaskan polar bear. Secondly, the motor was imcomparibly quieter than any Japan Airlines flight. Even a cloistered monk would start singing in joy. And thirdly, it was fast. The vehicle (NOZOMI Express) stopped only in motorgiant TOYOTA HQ – meaning Nagoya then glided into the old capital where the Emperor resided for 1,000 years at 7:53am. O’ blimey. The only downside was that it was ‘too fast’.
HIKARI Express, on the contrary in my view overwhelmed NOZOMI. The latter is apparently the fastest sort; usually used by vehemently busy salarymen and clergymen. But I found it unduly fast. While I enjoyed the return trip from KYOTO to ODAWARA on ‘platitude’ HIKARI; the splender lay in the fact that it stopped not only once but thrice or more – HIKARI 646, the vehicle that I jumped on stopped in Maibara station, then Gifu Hashima station next Nagoya station. And every time there was the following announcement; “We will take a brief stop for about 5 minutes”. Hark! O blimey! Consolation 100%! The ‘slowness’ of HIKARI yielded the spaked huge spirit of delight, as I sat and waited for speedy NOZOMIs to pass and overtake ‘our horse’. Oh indeed, far better than any luxurious gluttony. Equestrian supremacy! With a can of beer and a mini-bottle of Kyoto brewed Sake, both purchased cold, the choice to ride the archaic HIKARI was irrefutably the finest nostrum.
